Robert Garza’s family history embodies the American dream. Robert’s grandparents moved to Texas from Mexico in 1918, settling in Kinney County. With no formal education, Robert’s grandfather started a small fruit stand, which he operated in Kinney County during his life.
Robert Garza’s father, Joe N. Garza, took over the family fruit stand business and eventually helped grow it into a full-service grocery store serving Brackettville. A well-respected member of the community, his father served in various elected offices in Kinney County. Robert’s passion for service started at a young age when he worked in the family business and volunteered on his dad’s campaigns.
Robert graduated from the University of Texas at Austin for his undergraduate degree and received his law degree from St. Mary’s School of Law. Upon graduating from law school, he briefly moved back to Brackettville, where he served on the Brackettville city council, and then moved to Del Rio, which has now been his home for over 40 years. He has served the city of Del Rio as mayor for four years, city councilman for eight years, as city attorney for five years and he served two terms on the San Felipe Del Rio CISD Board, where he was the president of the board. Robert also served four years as a director and president of the Val Verde County Appraisal district.
Robert has extensive experience in various civic roles that has equipped him with a unique perspective on the challenges facing House District 74. Robert has seen first-hand the strain that the Biden border crisis has inflicted on our district. He is dedicated to finding Texas solutions to the border issues, alleviating the burdens placed upon our border community.
